Homemade Pita Bread
This easy homemade pita bread recipe creates soft, chewy rounds with perfect pockets for stuffing with your favorite fillings.
dailyrecipesbook.comMaking your own pita bread at home is incredibly rewarding and much easier than you might think. You do not need any fancy equipment like a stand mixer or a pizza stone to get great results. This simple recipe uses basic pantry ingredients, and the satisfaction of watching the bread puff up in the oven is truly fun for any home cook.
I love keeping a batch of these on hand because they are so versatile. Whether you want to tear them into wedges for dipping in hummus or stuff them with chicken and veggies for a quick lunch, fresh pita is always better than the store bought version. Plus, they freeze perfectly if you happen to have any left over.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 packet instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 to 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
Instructions
- 1
In a large bowl, stir together the warm water, yeast, sugar, salt, and olive oil.
- 2
Add the whole wheat flour and stir, then add the all purpose flour gradually until the dough comes together and is no longer sticky.
- 3
Knead the dough for a few minutes on a lightly floured surface until smooth.
- 4
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm spot for about one hour until it has doubled in size.
- 5
Preheat your oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 6
Punch the dough down and divide it into eight equal pieces.
- 7
Roll each piece into a circle about 6 inches across and 1/4 inch thick, keeping them an even thickness so they puff correctly.
- 8
Place the rolled dough on a baking sheet and bake for 3 to 5 minutes or until they have puffed up and are just starting to show a little color.
- 9
Remove them from the oven while they are still pale so they stay soft.
๐ก Tips
Store any leftovers in a freezer bag once they have cooled completely to keep them soft. To serve, you can stuff them with chicken or veggies, or brush them with olive oil and bake them again to create crispy pita chips.
