If you have ever visited a Japanese convenience store, you know exactly how delicious these little treats are. Unlike American versions that use a cornmeal batter, these use a pancake style mix that results in a light, sweet, and golden crust that is absolutely addictive.

My top tip for success is to make sure your oil is hot before adding the skewers. If the oil is too cold, the batter will soak it all up and become greasy. Use a thermometer if you have one to keep the heat steady around 340 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ingredients

  • 8 hot dogs
  • 8 wooden skewers
  • 1 cup pancake mix
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Ketchup and mustard for serving

Instructions

  1. 1

Insert a wooden skewer into the center of each hot dog and set them aside.

  2. 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the pancake mix, egg, milk, and sugar until you have a smooth batter.

  3. 3

Pour the batter into a tall, narrow glass to make it easier to coat the hot dogs.

  4. 4

Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot to 340 degrees Fahrenheit.

  5. 5

Dip each skewered hot dog into the batter, making sure it is fully covered.

  6. 6

Carefully lower the hot dog into the hot oil and fry for about 3 to 4 minutes until they are golden brown on all sides.

  7. 7

Remove the corn dogs from the oil and drain them on paper towels before serving with your favorite condiments.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

These are best enjoyed fresh right out of the fryer while they are still crispy. If you have leftovers, keep them in the fridge and reheat them in an oven or air fryer to bring back that crunch.
