There is nothing quite like the smell of a hot grill on a sunny afternoon. These burgers have become a staple at my house because they are simple to put together and always turn out perfectly flavorful for friends and family.

My best tip for success is to keep your meat very cold until the second it hits the grill. This ensures the fat stays inside the patty which keeps every bite nice and juicy instead of drying out.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef, at least 20 percent fat
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Lettuce, tomato slices, and onion for topping
  • Ketchup and mustard for serving

Instructions

  1. 1

Divide the ground beef into four equal portions and gently shape them into patties that are slightly wider than your buns.

  2. 2

Make a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to help them cook evenly.

  3. 3

Season both sides of the patties generously with salt and pepper.

  4. 4

Preheat your grill to medium high heat and lightly oil the grates.

  5. 5

Place the patties on the grill and cook for about four to five minutes per side for medium doneness.

  6. 6

Place a slice of cheese on each burger during the last minute of cooking so it melts beautifully.

  7. 7

Toast the buns on the grill for one minute and serve the burgers immediately with your favorite toppings.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

If you want extra flavor, mix a little Worcestershire sauce into the meat before shaping the patties. You can keep leftover patties in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. Just reheat them in a skillet over low heat with a splash of water to keep them moist.
