There is something so comforting about a big pot of homemade baked beans sitting on the table next to some grilled burgers. Once you start making them from scratch, you will find it hard to go back to the canned versions from the store because the flavor is so much deeper.

My best tip is to soak your beans overnight if you are using dry ones. This makes them much tender and helps them soak up all that wonderful sauce while they bake in the oven.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried navy beans
  • 1/2 pound bacon, chopped
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 cups water

Instructions

  1. 1

Rinse the dry beans and soak them in a large bowl of water overnight, then drain them the next morning.

  2. 2

Preheat your oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

  3. 3

Cook the chopped bacon and onion in a large pot or oven safe dish until the bacon is crispy and the onion is soft.

  4. 4

Stir in the drained beans, molasses, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, salt, and pepper.

  5. 5

Pour in the water and stir everything together until well combined.

  6. 6

Cover the pot and bake for about 4 hours, stirring occasionally and adding a little more water if the beans look too dry.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

These beans taste even better the next day after the flavors have had time to settle. You can store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days or freeze them for a quick side dish later.
