Salisbury steak is the ultimate comfort food that brings back memories of classic family dinners. It is essentially a tender, seasoned beef patty that is seared to perfection and then cooked in a delicious gravy, making it a budget friendly favorite that feels much fancier than it actually is.

I love this recipe because you do not need expensive cuts of meat to make a satisfying meal. By using simple pantry staples and fresh mushrooms, you can create a hearty dinner that pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes or steamed green beans.

Ingredients

  • 1 yellow onion, divided and diced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, divided
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, divided
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth

Instructions

  1. 1

In a bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, half of the diced onion, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, and half of the salt and pepper. Mix gently until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

  2. 2

Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties.

  3. 3

Heat the cooking oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 3 to 4 minutes per side until they are nicely browned, then remove them from the skillet and set aside.

  4. 4

In the same skillet, add the butter and the remaining onions and sliced mushrooms. Cook until the onions are soft and the mushrooms are golden brown.

  5. 5

Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and onions, stirring constantly for 1 minute to cook the raw flour taste away.

  6. 6

Slowly whisk in the beef broth and the remaining tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce. Continue to stir while the gravy bubbles and thickens.

  7. 7

Return the patties and any accumulated juices to the skillet. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 10 minutes until the beef is cooked through and the gravy is glossy.

  8. 8

Season with any extra salt or pepper if needed before serving warm.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. When reheating, add a splash of water or broth to the gravy to keep it from getting too thick. This meal tastes wonderful served over creamy mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles.
