Sweet potato casserole is a staple at my holiday table because it bridges the gap between a side dish and a dessert. The natural sweetness of the potatoes pairs perfectly with the buttery crunch of the topping.

To make this dish even better, try to use fresh sweet potatoes instead of canned ones for a much better texture. You can also prepare the mashed potato base a day ahead of time to make your busy cooking day much easier.

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/3 cup all purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons cold butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 2 cups mini marshmallows

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease a baking dish.

  2. 2

Boil the sweet potatoes in a large pot of water until they are very tender, which usually takes about 15 minutes.

  3. 3

Drain the potatoes and place them in a large bowl. Mash them with the softened butter, brown sugar, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon until smooth.

  4. 4

Spread the potato mixture evenly into your prepared baking dish.

  5. 5

In a small bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, and cold butter with a fork until the mixture is crumbly. Stir in the chopped pecans.

  6. 6

Sprinkle the streusel topping over the sweet potatoes and bake for 20 minutes.

  7. 7

Remove the dish from the oven, scatter the marshmallows over the top, and bake for another 5 to 10 minutes until the marshmallows are lightly toasted and golden.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. You can reheat individual portions in the microwave or oven until warm. If you prefer a less sweet version, feel free to skip the marshmallow layer and just use the pecan topping.
