Country Pork Meatballs with Onion Gravy
These cozy meatballs taste just like country sausages and come served in a rich, savory onion gravy.
dailyrecipesbook.comThere is something so special about a warm, homestyle meal that feels like it came straight from a farmhouse kitchen. These pork meatballs are seasoned with sage and thyme to give them that classic, comforting flavor that everyone loves. They are perfectly succulent, especially when they finish cooking in that delicious onion gravy.
I like to serve these meatballs over a pile of creamy mashed potatoes with a side of garden peas. It is the kind of dinner that makes a rainy evening feel much brighter and better. If you have leftovers, they actually taste even better the next day once the flavors have had time to settle.
Ingredients
- 500g ground pork
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 1 teaspoon ground sage
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons green onion, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 cups beef stock
- 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dark soy sauce (optional, for color)
Instructions
- 1
In a large bowl, combine the ground pork, panko breadcrumbs, egg, sage, thyme, onion powder, paprika, half of the minced garlic, and the green onion.
- 2
Use your hands to mix everything together until well combined, then roll the mixture into 20 equal sized meatballs.
- 3
Heat a large pan over medium high heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides, then remove them from the pan and set aside on a plate.
- 4
In the same pan, add the butter and sliced onions. Cook until the onions are soft and golden brown.
- 5
Stir in the remaining garlic and the flour, cooking for about one minute until the raw flour smell disappears.
- 6
Gradually pour in the beef stock while stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
- 7
Add the Worcestershire sauce and the dark soy sauce if using.
- 8
Return the meatballs to the pan and simmer gently for about 10 minutes until they are cooked through and the gravy has thickened to your liking.
๐ก Tips
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. To reheat, simply warm them in a pan over low heat with a tiny splash of water or stock to loosen the gravy. These also freeze well if you want to save them for a quick weeknight meal later.
