There is something so special about serving a big bowl of mussels for dinner. It feels fancy and impressive, but it is actually one of the quickest meals you can put together on a busy weeknight.

My favorite thing about this dish is the creamy basil sauce. Make sure you have plenty of crusty bread on hand because you will definitely want to soak up every last drop of the broth. It is a simple meal that feels like a treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds fresh mussels, scrubbed and debearded
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Crusty bread for serving

Instructions

  1. 1

Melt the butter in a large pot or deep skillet over medium heat.

  2. 2

Add the minced garlic and cook for about one minute until it smells fragrant.

  3. 3

Pour in the white wine and bring it to a simmer for two minutes.

  4. 4

Add the mussels to the pot and cover with a tight fitting lid.

  5. 5

Steam the mussels for about five to seven minutes, or until all the shells have opened.

  6. 6

Remove the pot from the heat and discard any mussels that did not open.

  7. 7

Stir in the heavy cream and fresh basil, then season with salt and pepper.

  8. 8

Serve the mussels immediately in bowls with plenty of sauce and crusty bread on the side.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Always discard any mussels that remain closed after steaming as they are not safe to eat. This dish is best served immediately, but if you have leftovers, keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for no more than one day.
