There is nothing quite like a warm mug of cocoa on a chilly day. This recipe is a favorite in my house because it is incredibly smooth, creamy, and comes together with just a few pantry staples in about five minutes.

The secret to making this extra special is a tiny pinch of salt. It really brings out the deep chocolate flavor without making the drink taste salty at all. I love to top mine with a mountain of mini marshmallows or a swirl of whipped cream.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. 1

In a small saucepan, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt over medium heat.

  2. 2

Slowly pour in the milk while whisking constantly to ensure there are no lumps.

  3. 3

Continue to heat the mixture until it is steaming, but be careful not to let it reach a full boil.

  4. 4

Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

  5. 5

Pour the hot chocolate into your favorite mug and serve warm.

πŸ’‘ Tips

For a richer drink, you can swap half of the milk for heavy cream. Store any leftover cocoa in the fridge and reheat it gently on the stove. If you are feeling fancy, add a cinnamon stick while heating the milk for a lovely spiced flavor.
