There is something so special about sitting down to a plate of hot, crispy fried fish. It is one of those classic comfort foods that always feels like a treat, especially when you pair it with some golden fries or a fresh side salad.

My biggest tip for this recipe is to keep your beer as cold as possible before mixing it into the batter. The temperature difference between the cold batter and the hot oil is what creates that airy, light crunch we all love.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound white fish fillets like cod or haddock
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup cold light beer
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. 1

Pat the fish fillets dry with paper towels and cut them into even serving pieces.

  2. 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder.

  3. 3

Pour the cold beer into the dry mixture and whisk until the batter is smooth.

  4. 4

Heat about two inches of oil in a deep pan or pot until it reaches 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

  5. 5

Dip each piece of fish into the batter, letting any excess drip off.

  6. 6

Carefully lower the fish into the hot oil and fry for about 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden brown.

  7. 7

Remove the fish from the oil and let it drain on a wire rack or paper towels before serving.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Serve this immediately with a squeeze of fresh lemon and your favorite tartar sauce. If you have leftovers, store them in the fridge and reheat them in a hot oven or air fryer to help bring back the crunch.
