I make this Oreo buttercream all the time because it is so simple and only uses a few pantry staples. It is rich and fluffy, making it the perfect topping for chocolate cupcakes or even a simple vanilla cake. My kids always ask for it, and it really makes a homemade dessert feel special.

The secret to a perfect texture is using room temperature butter. You want it soft enough to press with your finger but not melted at all. If you plan on piping this through a nozzle, make sure you crush your cookies into a very fine sand so they do not get stuck in the tip.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup Oreo cookies, crushed into very fine crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons milk

Instructions

  1. 1

In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer until it is completely smooth and creamy.

  2. 2

Gradually add about half of the powdered sugar, mixing on a low speed at first and then increasing to high until combined.

  3. 3

Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula to make sure every bit of butter is incorporated.

  4. 4

Stir in the vanilla extract and the remaining powdered sugar, then continue to beat the mixture until it is light and fluffy.

  5. 5

Use a spatula to gently fold in the crushed Oreo crumbs so the frosting stays bright and does not turn a muddy gray color.

  6. 6

Add the milk one tablespoon at a time, mixing well after each addition, until you reach your favorite consistency.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store any leftover buttercream in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week or freeze it for longer. Always let the frosting come back to room temperature and give it a quick stir before using it again. Make sure your cakes are completely cool before frosting so the butter does not melt.
