There is something truly special about a poke cake. By poking holes into the warm cake, you let all that delicious caramel sauce soak deep into every single bite, making it incredibly moist.

It is a favorite at our family gatherings because it tastes like you spent hours in the kitchen, but it actually comes together quite easily. My best tip is to make sure you use a wooden spoon handle to get nice big holes for the caramel to sink into.

Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix plus required eggs, oil, and water
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup caramel ice cream topping
  • 1 container whipped topping, thawed
  • 1/2 cup toffee bits

Instructions

  1. 1

Prepare and bake the chocolate cake in a 9x13 inch pan according to the package directions.

  2. 2

As soon as you take the cake out of the oven, use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over the surface of the cake.

  3. 3

In a small bowl, stir together the sweetened condensed milk and the caramel topping.

  4. 4

Pour the caramel mixture evenly over the warm cake, making sure it fills all the holes you created.

  5. 5

Let the cake cool down completely in the pan.

  6. 6

Once cool, spread the whipped topping over the top and sprinkle generously with the toffee bits.

  7. 7

Keep the cake in the fridge until you are ready to serve it.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store any leftovers in the refrigerator covered tightly with plastic wrap for up to three days. This cake actually tastes even better the next day after the caramel has fully set. Serve it cold for the best texture.
