If you are tired of plain baked beans that just taste like sugar, this recipe is for you. By starting with a shortcut of canned beans and adding fresh vegetables and a punchy sauce, you get that slow cooked flavor without spending all day in the kitchen.

This dish is a crowd favorite because the bacon adds a nice salty crunch and the vinegar cuts through the sweetness just right. It is a reliable side dish that pairs perfectly with anything you pull off the grill.

Ingredients

  • 6 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans baked beans, 15 ounces each
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. 2

Cook the chopped bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until it becomes crispy. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon, leaving about a tablespoon of the rendered fat in the pan.

  3. 3

Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet with the bacon fat. Sautรฉ them for about 5 minutes until they soften.

  4. 4

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

  5. 5

In a large bowl, combine the cooked beans, barbecue sauce, molasses, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and smoked paprika.

  6. 6

Fold in the cooked bacon and the vegetable mixture.

  7. 7

Transfer everything to a baking dish and bake for 30 to 40 minutes until the sauce is thick and bubbly.

  8. 8

Let the beans sit for 5 minutes before serving to help the sauce set.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. These beans reheat beautifully in the microwave or on the stove. If you prefer extra heat, feel free to add a pinch of red pepper flakes when you add the garlic.
