There is something so satisfying about making your favorite takeout meal right in your own kitchen. This sesame chicken uses bite sized pieces of juicy chicken coated in a light batter, then tossed in a sticky sauce that hits all the right notes.

My top tip for this dish is to make sure your oil is nice and hot before you start frying the chicken. If the oil is not hot enough, the breading can get a bit soggy, so testing it with a small wooden spoon or a thermometer really helps get that perfect crunch.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
  • 2 green onions, sliced

Instructions

  1. 1

In a shallow bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, flour, salt, and pepper.

  2. 2

Toss the chicken pieces in the flour mixture until they are evenly coated on all sides.

  3. 3

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium high heat.

  4. 4

Add the chicken pieces to the pan in a single layer and fry for 5 to 7 minutes until golden brown and cooked through, then remove the chicken from the pan.

  5. 5

In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, sesame oil, vinegar, and garlic.

  6. 6

Pour the sauce into the same skillet and let it simmer for about 2 minutes until it begins to thicken.

  7. 7

Return the cooked chicken to the skillet and toss everything together until every piece is well coated.

  8. 8

Sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and fresh green onions before serving.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Serve this chicken over a bed of fluffy steamed white rice or stir fried vegetables for a complete meal. You can store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. Just reheat it in a pan over low heat to help the sauce get sticky again.
