There is nothing quite like the smell of fresh apple cider simmering on the stove to make a house feel like a home. This recipe uses simple ingredients to create a drink that is much better than anything you can buy in a carton.

My favorite thing about this recipe is how easy it is to adjust the sweetness. If you prefer it a little more tart, you can cut back on the sugar or honey, but the blend of spices really makes the flavor shine.

Ingredients

  • 8 cups apple cider
  • 1 orange, sliced into rounds
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon whole allspice
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar or honey, optional

Instructions

  1. 1

Pour the apple cider into a large pot over medium heat.

  2. 2

Add the orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and allspice to the pot.

  3. 3

If you want your cider a little sweeter, stir in the brown sugar or honey at this time.

  4. 4

Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then turn the heat to low.

  5. 5

Let it simmer for at least 20 minutes to allow all those lovely spices to infuse the liquid.

  6. 6

Strain the cider to remove the spices and fruit slices before serving warm.

πŸ’‘ Tips

You can keep any leftovers in the fridge for up to three days and just reheat them on the stove. If you have extra cinnamon sticks, use them as pretty stirrers when you serve the mugs to guests.
