There is truly nothing like the smell of fresh bread baking in your own kitchen. This brown bread recipe is a favorite because it is so comforting and pairs perfectly with a thick spread of salted butter while it is still warm.

It is a very straightforward recipe for anyone new to bread baking. Just be sure to let your dough rise in a warm spot so the yeast can do its best work for a nice, airy loaf.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 to 3 cups all purpose flour

Instructions

  1. 1

In a large bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and brown sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.

  2. 2

Stir in the melted butter, salt, and the whole wheat flour. Mix well.

  3. 3

Add the all purpose flour one cup at a time until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl.

  4. 4

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead it for about 5 to 7 minutes until it feels smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour or until it has doubled in size.

  6. 6

Punch the dough down and shape it into a loaf. Place it into a greased bread pan.

  7. 7

Cover and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.

  8. 8

Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 to 35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.

  9. 9

Remove from the pan and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store your leftover bread in an airtight container or a paper bag at room temperature for up to three days. If you want to keep it longer, slice the loaf and freeze it so you can grab a piece to toast whenever you like.
