Teriyaki burgers were always my favorite treat growing up. This homemade version brings back those nostalgic feelings with a perfectly charred beef patty glazed in a sticky, homemade teriyaki sauce that everyone in my house loves.

The secret is the balance between the salty sauce and the sweet grilled pineapple. My best tip for success is to let your onions cook slowly over low heat until they are soft and golden, which adds a wonderful depth of flavor to the whole burger.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup teriyaki sauce
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices fresh or canned pineapple
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 4 slices of Swiss or provolone cheese
  • Lettuce leaves for serving
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. 1

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat and cook the sliced onions until they are soft and golden brown.

  2. 2

Shape the ground beef into four equal patties and season them with a little salt and pepper.

  3. 3

Sear the patties in a hot pan or on a grill until they are cooked to your preference.

  4. 4

During the last few minutes of cooking, brush the patties generously with the teriyaki sauce.

  5. 5

In the same pan, quickly grill the pineapple slices until they are lightly charred on both sides.

  6. 6

Toast your burger buns, then assemble each one with a lettuce leaf, the glazed patty, a slice of cheese, the warm pineapple, and the caramelized onions.

πŸ’‘ Tips

Serve these burgers with extra teriyaki sauce on the side for dipping. You can store leftover patties in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. If you like a little heat, add a slice of jalapeΓ±o on top.
