One Pot Southern Shrimp Creole
This is a cozy and flavor packed meal that brings the heart of the South right to your dinner table in just one pot.
dailyrecipesbook.comI always turn to this recipe when I want something comforting that does not take all day to cook. It is full of juicy shrimp and tender vegetables simmered in a spicy tomato sauce that smells amazing while it bubbles on the stove.
One of the best things about this dish is how easy it is to clean up since everything happens in one pan. If you are serving folks who do not like too much heat, you can easily turn down the spice by using less hot sauce or red pepper flakes.
Ingredients
- 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 medium sweet onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 1 red bell pepper, diced
- 2 stalks celery, diced
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 can (14.5 oz) stewed tomatoes
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce
- 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- 1
Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan or Dutch oven over medium high heat.
- 2
Add the diced onion and garlic to the pan and cook for about a minute until they smell fragrant.
- 3
Toss in the diced celery and both bell peppers, then cook for about 4 minutes while stirring often until they start to get soft.
- 4
Stir in the tomato paste, tomato sauce, stewed tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce until everything is well combined.
- 5
Add the Cajun seasoning, dried thyme, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper.
- 6
Bring the sauce to a light simmer, then turn the heat down to medium low and let it cook for 20 to 30 minutes.
- 7
Gently stir in the shrimp and cook for about 10 minutes or until the shrimp turn pink and are no longer translucent.
- 8
Give the sauce a quick taste to see if it needs more salt or spice, then serve it hot over a big bowl of rice.
๐ก Tips
If you are using frozen shrimp, make sure to thaw them completely and pat them dry before adding them to the sauce so it stays thick. This dish keeps well in the fridge for a couple of days, just reheat it gently on the stove so the shrimp stays tender.
