This chocolate buttercream is my absolute favorite frosting to make at home. It is deeply chocolatey, wonderfully rich, and has a smooth texture that spreads easily over cakes and cupcakes.

My best tip for success is to make sure your butter is softened to room temperature before you start. If the butter is too cold, the frosting will turn out lumpy instead of smooth.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. 1

Beat the softened butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer until it is light and fluffy.

  2. 2

Sift the powdered sugar and cocoa powder together into a separate bowl.

  3. 3

Add the sugar mixture to the butter one cup at a time, mixing on low speed until combined.

  4. 4

Pour in the heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt.

  5. 5

Turn the mixer up to medium speed and beat for two minutes until the frosting is creamy and smooth.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store any leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. When you are ready to use it again, let it come to room temperature and give it a quick whip with your mixer to get that creamy texture back.
