Simple Natural Fruit Fly Trap
This easy homemade solution is the most effective way to keep your kitchen free of fruit flies.
Fruit flies can be such a nuisance, especially during the warmer months when we have fresh produce on the counter. I have tried many store bought gadgets, but nothing works quite as well as this simple homemade trap. It is inexpensive, uses things you likely already have, and works like a charm.
You only need a few basic pantry items to put this together. The best tip is to make sure your jar is covered tightly with plastic wrap so the flies cannot escape once they find their way inside.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 drop liquid dish soap
- 1 piece plastic wrap
- 1 rubber band
Instructions
- 1
Pour the apple cider vinegar and sugar into a small glass jar or bowl.
- 2
Stir the mixture until the sugar is mostly dissolved.
- 3
Add the drop of dish soap to the liquid, but do not stir it in too much as you want to keep the surface tension low.
- 4
Cover the top of the jar tightly with plastic wrap and secure it around the rim with a rubber band.
- 5
Use a toothpick or a fork to poke several small holes in the top of the plastic wrap.
- 6
Place the jar in the area where you see the most fruit flies and leave it out for a day or two.
💡 Tips
Place your trap near your fruit bowl or trash can for the best results. You can refresh the liquid every few days if needed. When the trap is full, simply discard the contents and wash the jar thoroughly before making a new one.
