Simple Slow Cooker Kalua Pork
This tender Hawaiian style shredded pork uses just a few ingredients for an incredibly flavorful meal.
This dish is a favorite in my kitchen because it is so easy to prepare. You only need a few basic ingredients to capture that smoky, savory taste that makes Kalua pork so special. It is perfect for busy days when you want a hearty meal waiting for you at dinner time.
My top tip for this recipe is to make sure you use a good quality liquid smoke, as it provides the authentic flavor that reminds me of an island luau. Do not worry about adding water to the slow cooker, as the pork will release plenty of juices on its own during the long cooking process.
Ingredients
- 3 to 4 pounds pork shoulder or pork butt
- 1 tablespoon sea salt
- 1 tablespoon liquid smoke
- 2 cloves garlic, smashed (optional)
Instructions
- 1
Remove the pork from its packaging and pat it dry with paper towels.
- 2
Rub the sea salt all over the surface of the pork to ensure it is evenly seasoned.
- 3
Place the pork into your slow cooker and pour the liquid smoke over the top.
- 4
If you are using garlic, tuck the smashed cloves around the sides of the pork.
- 5
Cover the slow cooker with the lid and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours or on high for 5 to 6 hours.
- 6
Once the pork is fork tender, remove it from the pot and shred the meat using two forks.
- 7
Discard any large pieces of fat and stir the shredded meat back into the juices before serving.
๐ก Tips
Serve this pork over a bowl of steamed white rice with a side of cabbage or roasted pineapple. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days or freeze them for a quick meal later.
