Butter chicken is a favorite in our house because it is so cozy and flavorful. Using the crockpot makes the chicken incredibly tender and allows the spices to soak into every bite.

My top tip for this recipe is to stir in the heavy cream right at the end. This keeps the sauce looking beautiful and prevents it from curdling during the long cook time.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite sized pieces
  • 1 large yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons ginger, grated
  • 1 can tomato sauce (15 ounces)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. 1

Place the chicken pieces into the basin of your slow cooker.

  2. 2

Add the onion, garlic, ginger, tomato sauce, tomato paste, butter, and all the spices to the pot.

  3. 3

Stir everything well to coat the chicken in the sauce.

  4. 4

Cover and cook on low for 6 hours or on high for 3 hours until the chicken is tender.

  5. 5

Turn off the heat and stir in the heavy cream until the sauce is smooth and creamy.

  6. 6

Serve warm over steamed basmati rice or with a side of toasted naan bread, garnished with fresh cilantro.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. You can also freeze this dish for a quick meal later, just add the cream after you reheat it to keep the texture perfect.
