There is something so special about a mug of thick and spicy Mexican hot chocolate on a chilly day. The mix of cinnamon and a little heat from the cayenne pepper makes it feel much more exciting than your average cocoa powder mix.

I love serving this to friends when we are gathered around the kitchen table. For the best result, make sure you whisk the mixture well to get that lovely little bit of foam on top before serving.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3 ounces high quality dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream for serving

Instructions

  1. 1

Pour the milk into a small saucepan and set it over medium heat until it starts to steam.

  2. 2

Whisk in the cocoa powder, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cayenne pepper until smooth.

  3. 3

Add the chopped chocolate and continue to whisk constantly until the chocolate has completely melted.

  4. 4

Stir in the vanilla extract and remove from the heat.

  5. 5

Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and top with a dollop of whipped cream if you like.

πŸ’‘ Tips

To store leftovers, keep the drink in the fridge for up to two days and reheat it gently on the stove. If you prefer a dairy free version, simply swap the milk for almond or oat milk. Serve with a cinnamon stick for an extra touch of cozy style.
