Crispy Homemade Sourdough Croutons
These crunchy, golden croutons turn any simple salad or bowl of soup into a special meal.
dailyrecipesbook.comThere is nothing quite like the crunch of a fresh crouton made right in your own kitchen. Using sourdough bread gives these a wonderful tang that you just cannot get from store bought bags, and they stay crispy for days when stored properly.
My favorite trick is to toss the bread cubes with a mix of melted butter and olive oil. This gives you the best of both worlds, as the butter provides a rich flavor and the olive oil helps them get perfectly golden brown without burning.
Ingredients
- 4 cups sourdough bread, cut into 1 inch cubes
- 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- 1
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- 2
Place the sourdough cubes in a large mixing bowl.
- 3
In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, olive oil, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and dried herbs.
- 4
Drizzle the butter mixture over the bread cubes and toss gently until every piece is evenly coated.
- 5
Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese over the bread and toss again to distribute the cheese.
- 6
Spread the cubes out in a single layer on your prepared baking sheet.
- 7
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, flipping them halfway through, until they are golden brown and crisp.
- 8
Let them cool completely on the tray before serving so they firm up nicely.
๐ก Tips
Store your cooled croutons in an airtight container at room temperature for up to five days. If they lose their crunch, just pop them back in a warm oven for a few minutes to crisp them up again. They are perfect for topping creamy tomato soup or a classic Caesar salad.
