This creamy basil sauce is one of my absolute favorite things to keep in the fridge during the warmer months. It tastes like a fresh, zingy aioli and is just wonderful for spreading on sandwiches or using as a dip for your favorite crunchy vegetables.

If you have a basil plant that is growing like crazy, this recipe is the best way to use those leaves once you get tired of traditional pesto. It comes together in just a few minutes using basic pantry staples, so it is perfect for a quick lunch upgrade.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves, packed
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 small clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • A pinch of black pepper

Instructions

  1. 1

Place the fresh basil leaves, mayonnaise, olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, salt, and pepper into a blender or a small food processor.

  2. 2

Pulse the mixture several times until the basil is finely chopped and the sauce is smooth and creamy.

  3. 3

Taste the sauce and add an extra squeeze of lemon juice or a little more salt if you think it needs it.

  4. 4

Serve immediately or transfer to a glass jar to chill in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

This sauce keeps well in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for up to three days. It tastes fantastic drizzled over grilled chicken, served as a dip for roasted potatoes, or spread on a fresh turkey sandwich.
