There is something so comforting about waking up to the smell of cinnamon and toasted bread. These sticks are a favorite in my house because they are easy to hold and perfect for dipping into a bowl of warm maple syrup.

My best tip is to use bread that is a day or two old because it holds its shape better in the egg mixture. It ensures you get that lovely custardy center without the bread falling apart on you.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices of thick sandwich bread
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons butter for the pan
  • Maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  1. 1

Cut each slice of bread into three equal strips.

  2. 2

In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla extract until well combined.

  3. 3

Melt the butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat.

  4. 4

Dip each bread strip into the egg mixture for a few seconds per side, making sure it is coated but not soaking wet.

  5. 5

Place the strips in the hot skillet and cook for about 2 minutes on each side until they are golden brown and crispy.

  6. 6

Serve warm with a side of syrup for dipping.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. You can reheat them in a toaster oven to get that crispy texture back. They also freeze very well if you wrap them tightly in foil.
