There is nothing quite like the smell of apples and cinnamon filling the kitchen on a slow afternoon. This recipe is a favorite because the slow cooker does all the hard work for you, breaking the apples down into a smooth and rich spread that is perfect for toast or biscuits.

My best tip is to use a variety of apples if you can. Mixing sweet and tart varieties gives the butter a much deeper flavor than using just one kind alone.

Ingredients

  • 5 pounds apples, cored and chopped
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. 1

Place the chopped apples into your slow cooker.

  2. 2

In a small bowl, mix the white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and salt together.

  3. 3

Pour the sugar mixture over the apples and stir well to coat them.

  4. 4

Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours, or until the apples are very soft and dark brown.

  5. 5

Use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until it is completely smooth.

  6. 6

If you prefer a thicker butter, leave the lid off and cook on high for another hour to let the extra moisture evaporate.

  7. 7

Let the apple butter cool completely before moving it into airtight jars.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store your finished apple butter in the refrigerator for up to three weeks. It also freezes beautifully in small containers for several months. Try swirling it into your morning oatmeal or using it as a topping for pancakes.
