There is nothing quite like homemade guacamole to bring people together at the table. This recipe relies on fresh, vibrant ingredients like creamy avocado, tangy lime, and zesty cilantro to create a dip that tastes much better than anything you can buy in a store. It is simple to prepare, naturally healthy, and always disappears quickly at parties.

Whether you are topping your favorite tacos, serving it with a big bowl of tortilla chips, or adding it to a burrito bowl, this recipe is incredibly versatile. It is easy to scale up for a crowd or halve for a quick snack, and you can always adjust the heat level by choosing how much jalapeño to include.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium ripe avocados, halved, seeded, and peeled
  • 1/3 cup finely chopped red or white onion
  • 1/2 bunch fresh cilantro leaves, finely chopped
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lime zest
  • 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 1 medium jalapeño pepper, finely diced (optional)
  • 1 clove garlic, finely grated
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 firm Roma tomato, seeded and diced (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

Place the avocado flesh into a medium mixing bowl.

  2. 2

Use a large fork to gently mash the avocados until they reach your preferred consistency, keeping a few chunks for texture.

  3. 3

Fold in the onion, cilantro, lime zest, lime juice, jalapeño, and garlic.

  4. 4

Season the mixture with salt and pepper to your liking.

  5. 5

If you are using tomatoes, gently fold them in last so they stay intact.

  6. 6

Serve immediately with your favorite chips or as a topping.

💡 Tips

To store leftovers, press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole to keep air out and prevent browning. You can serve this with carrots, celery, or bell pepper strips for a healthy snack or keep it classic with crunchy tortilla chips.
