The whiskey sour is a true icon in the world of cocktails. By adding an egg white, you get a beautiful frothy layer that makes every sip feel a little more special. It is a simple addition that completely changes the texture and adds a lovely creaminess to the drink.

Do not worry if you are new to using egg whites in drinks. It is a tradition that has been around for over a century and it is perfectly safe when using fresh, refrigerated eggs. If you prefer to avoid eggs entirely, you can easily use two tablespoons of aquafaba as a clever vegan substitute.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces bourbon or your favorite whiskey
  • 3/4 ounce fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup
  • 1 egg white or 2 tablespoons aquafaba
  • Orange peel and cocktail cherry for garnish
  • A few drops of bitters for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

Add the whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white to your cocktail shaker without any ice.

  2. 2

Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds to help the egg white emulsify and build a base of foam.

  3. 3

Open the shaker and add a handful of ice.

  4. 4

Shake again for another 30 seconds until the outside of the shaker feels cold.

  5. 5

Strain the drink into a glass.

  6. 6

Garnish with a cherry and an orange peel, and add a few drops of bitters on the foam if you like.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Serve this cocktail immediately in a chilled glass to keep the foam looking its best. If you have extra egg whites, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. Always use fresh lemon juice for the brightest flavor.
