Homemade Pork and Shrimp Wonton Soup
A comforting bowl of handmade wontons tucked into a light, savory broth.
dailyrecipesbook.comMaking wontons at home is much easier than it looks, and the taste is far better than anything you will find in the freezer aisle. These little dumplings are filled with a mix of juicy pork and chopped shrimp to give them a great texture and plenty of flavor.
This recipe is perfect for busy nights because you can make a big batch of wontons ahead of time and freeze them for later. Just drop them straight into boiling water whenever you need a quick and warming meal.
Ingredients
- 1/2 pound ground pork
- 1/2 pound shrimp, peeled, deveined, and finely minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 green onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
- 40 wonton wrappers
- 6 cups chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce for the broth
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil for the broth
- Fresh cilantro or extra green onions for garnish
Instructions
- 1
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, minced shrimp, ginger, garlic, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, and white pepper.
- 2
Mix the filling ingredients together until they are well combined and slightly sticky.
- 3
Place one wonton wrapper on a clean surface and put a small teaspoon of filling in the very center.
- 4
Moisten the edges of the wrapper with a little bit of water, then fold it into a triangle and press the edges firmly to seal.
- 5
Bring a large pot of water to a boil and gently drop the wontons in, working in batches if your pot is small.
- 6
Cook the wontons for about 3 to 5 minutes, or until they float to the surface and the filling is cooked through.
- 7
While the wontons cook, heat the chicken broth in a separate pot with the extra soy sauce and sesame oil.
- 8
Use a slotted spoon to move the cooked wontons into serving bowls and pour the hot broth over them.
- 9
Top with fresh cilantro or green onions and serve while hot.
๐ก Tips
To freeze your wontons, place them on a baking sheet in a single layer until they are solid, then move them to a freezer bag. You can add some baby bok choy or spinach to the broth at the very end for extra color and crunch.
