Fall is my favorite time of year because it means we can finally go apple picking and fill the house with the scent of cinnamon. There is something so special about a warm apple crisp fresh from the oven, especially when the apples are still bubbling.

I love making this because it is much easier than pie but feels just as festive. Make sure to choose a firm apple that holds its shape during baking so you get a nice bite in every spoonful.

Ingredients

  • 6 large Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees and grease a square baking dish.

  2. 2

Toss the sliced apples with the granulated sugar and half of the cinnamon in a large bowl.

  3. 3

Spread the apple mixture evenly into the bottom of your prepared baking dish.

  4. 4

In another bowl, mix the oats, flour, brown sugar, remaining cinnamon, and salt.

  5. 5

Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work the cold butter into the oat mixture until it looks like coarse crumbs.

  6. 6

Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.

  7. 7

Bake for 40 to 45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.

  8. 8

Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

This is best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to three days and reheat them in the oven to keep the topping crisp.
