Classic Homemade Apple Pie
A timeless apple pie with a perfectly flaky crust and a sweet cinnamon filling that sets just right every time.
dailyrecipesbook.comThere is nothing quite like the smell of a fresh apple pie baking in the oven. This recipe creates a beautiful double crust that stays crisp and a delicious apple filling that is not too runny, making every slice a winner.
The secret to a great pie is letting it cool down completely before you slice it. If you cut into it while it is still warm, the filling will spill out, so try to be patient while it rests on the counter.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
- 6 large Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples, peeled and sliced
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 egg, beaten
Instructions
- 1
Mix the flour and salt in a bowl, then cut in the cold butter until you have small crumbs.
- 2
Add the ice water one tablespoon at a time until the dough holds together, then divide into two disks, wrap them, and chill for an hour.
- 3
Toss the sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, flour, and lemon juice in a large bowl.
- 4
Roll out one disk of dough and place it into a nine inch pie dish.
- 5
Pour the apple mixture into the crust.
- 6
Roll out the second disk of dough and place it over the apples, trimming and crimping the edges to seal.
- 7
Brush the top with the beaten egg and cut a few slits to let steam escape.
- 8
Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for about 50 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
- 9
Let the pie cool completely on a wire rack before serving.
๐ก Tips
Serve each slice warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream. If you have leftovers, keep the pie loosely covered at room temperature for two days or in the fridge for up to four days.
