There is something truly special about a homemade cake sitting at the center of the table. This white cake is my absolute favorite because it is simple to put together but always looks and tastes like something you would get from a professional bakery.

Since this cake has a clean and light flavor, it works perfectly with any frosting you love. A quick tip for the best results is to make sure your butter and eggs are at room temperature before you start, as this helps the batter mix together into a smooth, airy texture.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups cake flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large egg whites, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and grease two 8 inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

Whisk together the cake flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.

  3. 3

In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.

  4. 4

Add the egg whites one at a time, beating well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.

  5. 5

Add the flour mixture and the milk to the butter mixture in alternating batches, starting and ending with the flour. Mix until just combined.

  6. 6

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops.

  7. 7

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  8. 8

Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

💡 Tips

Store this cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. If you want to make the layers ahead of time, you can wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and freeze them for up to one month.
