These soft, chewy pretzels are the perfect snack for game day or any afternoon gathering.
dailyrecipesbook.comThere is nothing quite like pulling a tray of warm, salted pretzels out of the oven. They are a family favorite in our house because they are fun to make and even better to share with friends while watching a big game.
My best tip for success is to make sure your water for the yeast is warm but not hot. If the water is too hot, it will kill the yeast and your dough will not rise. Just aim for that comfortable temperature you would use for a baby bottle.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 1 package active dry yeast
- 4 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 2 ounces unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 4 cups water
- Coarse sea salt for topping
Instructions
- 1
Combine the warm water, sugar, and salt in a bowl. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it gets foamy.
- 2
Add the flour and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms, then knead it on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
- 3
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for about an hour until it has doubled in size.
- 4
Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- 5
Bring the 4 cups of water and baking soda to a boil in a large pot.
- 6
Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and twist into a pretzel shape.
- 7
Drop each pretzel into the boiling water for 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on your prepared baking sheet.
- 8
Sprinkle the tops with coarse salt and bake for 12 to 15 minutes until they are a deep golden brown.
💡 Tips
Serve these warm with a side of yellow mustard or a warm cheese dip. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container at room temperature and reheat them in the oven for a few minutes to get them soft again.
