If you are looking for a plant based meal that actually feels like a proper burger, this is the recipe for you. I love how these patties come together with simple pantry staples, and they are sturdy enough to satisfy even the biggest meat eaters in your family.

My secret for the best texture is to pulse only a portion of the lentils with the spices. By keeping some lentils whole, you get a much better bite. These are perfect for a busy weeknight because they bake right in the oven instead of needing constant attention on a hot grill.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups cooked brown lentils
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 1 large carrot, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 0.5 cup all purpose flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cooking oil spray

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. 2

In a food processor, combine 1 cup of the cooked lentils with the garlic, tomato paste, paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper. Pulse until you have a thick, sticky paste.

  3. 3

Transfer this mixture to a large bowl. Fold in the remaining 0.5 cup of whole lentils, the grated carrot, the diced onion, and the flour.

  4. 4

Mix until everything is well combined. If the mixture feels too wet, add a little extra flour. It should be firm enough to hold its shape when you squeeze it in your hand.

  5. 5

Divide the mixture into four equal parts and form them into patties about half an inch thick. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.

  6. 6

Lightly spray the tops of the patties with cooking oil. Bake for 15 minutes.

  7. 7

Carefully flip the patties using a wide spatula, then bake for another 15 minutes until they are firm and have nice crispy edges.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Serve these on toasted buns with your favorite toppings like lettuce, tomato, and pickles. If you have leftovers, keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days and reheat them in a pan for a few minutes to bring back the crispiness.
