There is something truly special about baking your own sourdough at home. While I love visiting the farmers market for fresh bread, being able to pull a crusty, tangy loaf out of your own oven is a wonderful feeling. This recipe is perfect for those who want that professional bakery quality without any fuss.

My favorite tip is to make sure your sourdough starter is very active and bubbly before you begin mixing the dough. If you are new to this, patience is your best friend during the fermentation process because good bread takes a little time to rise.

Ingredients

  • 100 grams active sourdough starter
  • 350 grams warm water
  • 500 grams bread flour
  • 10 grams sea salt

Instructions

  1. 1

Whisk the sourdough starter and warm water together in a large mixing bowl until the starter is mostly dissolved.

  2. 2

Add the bread flour and salt to the bowl and mix until a shaggy dough forms.

  3. 3

Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let the dough rest for about 30 minutes.

  4. 4

Perform a few sets of stretch and folds by pulling the edge of the dough up and folding it over the center, then let it rest for another 4 hours to rise.

  5. 5

Shape the dough into a smooth round ball and place it into a floured proofing basket to rest in the fridge overnight.

  6. 6

Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit with a Dutch oven inside.

  7. 7

Score the top of the dough with a sharp knife and bake inside the covered Dutch oven for 25 minutes.

  8. 8

Remove the lid and bake for another 20 minutes until the crust is golden brown and crispy.

💡 Tips

Store your sourdough bread in a paper bag or a bread box to keep the crust crispy for a few days. You can also slice the entire loaf and freeze it so you can toast a fresh piece whenever you like.
