Making caramel from scratch is much easier than most people think. You only need two basic ingredients and a little bit of patience to get that perfect amber color and rich flavor that store bought versions just cannot match.

I love keeping a jar of this in the fridge to drizzle over ice cream or stir into my morning coffee. Just remember to watch the pan closely since sugar can go from golden to burnt very quickly.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. 1

Combine the sugar and water in a medium saucepan over medium heat.

  2. 2

Stir the mixture gently until the sugar has completely dissolved.

  3. 3

Once dissolved stop stirring and let the mixture bubble away undisturbed.

  4. 4

Watch closely as the syrup turns from clear to a deep golden amber color.

  5. 5

Remove the pan from the heat immediately once it reaches your desired shade and let it cool slightly before using.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store your leftover caramel in a glass jar in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. If it gets too thick after chilling simply warm it up in the microwave for a few seconds to get it pourable again. This sauce is wonderful over vanilla bean ice cream or sliced apples.
