There is nothing quite like the smell of fresh popcorn hitting the air when you are settling in for a movie. Many of us have struggled with burnt microwave bags that ruin the entire snack, but making it on the stove is a simple way to get perfect results every single time.

This method uses just a few basic ingredients to give you a crispy, light, and delicious snack. It is much cheaper than buying pre made bags and lets you control exactly how much salt or butter you want to add to the pot.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil or vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter, optional

Instructions

  1. 1

Place a large heavy bottomed pot on the stove over medium high heat.

  2. 2

Add the oil and three kernels of popcorn to the pot.

  3. 3

Cover the pot with a lid and wait for the three test kernels to pop.

  4. 4

Once those kernels pop, remove the lid and pour in the rest of the kernels in an even layer.

  5. 5

Remove the pot from the heat for thirty seconds to let the temperature even out, then return it to the heat.

  6. 6

Keep the lid slightly ajar to let steam escape, which keeps the popcorn crisp.

  7. 7

Shake the pot gently back and forth over the burner until the popping slows down to a few seconds between pops.

  8. 8

Remove from the heat immediately, pour into a large bowl, and toss with salt and melted butter if you like.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature to keep them fresh for a day or two. If your popcorn loses its crunch, spread it on a baking sheet and warm it in a low oven for a few minutes to crisp it back up.
