Steaming is one of my favorite ways to prepare a side dish because it is so fast and healthy. You get to enjoy the fresh flavor of the produce without any of the heavy oils or frying that can hide the natural taste of your garden greens.

Since this method uses a simple steamer setup, you can have a perfect side dish ready in minutes. It works beautifully for broccoli, carrots, or green beans, and it makes your dinner prep so much easier during a busy week.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh broccoli florets
  • 2 large carrots, sliced into rounds
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. 1

Place your steamer basket into a large pot and pour in the water until it reaches just below the bottom of the basket.

  2. 2

Add your cleaned and chopped vegetables into the steamer basket and cover the pot with a tight lid.

  3. 3

Turn the heat to medium high and let the water come to a boil, then steam the vegetables for about 5 to 7 minutes.

  4. 4

Check that the vegetables are tender yet still have a nice crunch, then carefully remove them from the heat.

  5. 5

Toss the hot vegetables with butter, salt, and pepper in a serving bowl before enjoying.

๐Ÿ’ก Tips

Serve these vegetables alongside grilled chicken or fish for a balanced meal. If you have leftovers, keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days and add them to a salad later.
