Homemade Classic English Muffins
These homemade English muffins are soft, chewy, and perfect for a slow weekend morning breakfast.
There is something truly special about making your own bread at home. These muffins have that signature nooks and crannies texture that makes them so great at soaking up melted butter and your favorite fruit preserves.
Since this recipe relies on a gentle rise, my biggest tip is to give the dough plenty of time to rest in a warm spot. It makes a world of difference for the final texture of your muffins.
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm milk
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 package active dry yeast
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- Cornmeal for dusting
Instructions
- 1
Combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast in a small bowl. Let it sit for about five minutes until it gets foamy.
- 2
In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and melted butter, then stir until a soft dough forms.
- 3
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about five minutes until it feels smooth and elastic.
- 4
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour or until it doubles in size.
- 5
Punch the dough down and roll it out until it is about three quarters of an inch thick. Use a round cutter to cut out your muffins.
- 6
Place the muffins on a baking sheet dusted with cornmeal and let them rest for another thirty minutes.
- 7
Heat a lightly greased skillet over medium heat. Cook the muffins for about five to seven minutes on each side until they are golden brown and cooked through.
๐ก Tips
Store your muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. For the best flavor, always split them with a fork instead of a knife to keep those fluffy interior holes intact. They also freeze very well if you want to save some for later.
